Philosophy
I believe that any classroom or rehearsal space should provide a safe environment that allows every student to flourish both as an individual and as a part of the entire class or ensemble. In order to achieve this, my teaching is grounded in principles of inclusive excellence and I actively work to be antiracist and equitable in my practices.
I believe that music can be a vehicle to communicate lessons in humanity and provide students with skills that aid their daily lives. Concepts of respect, accountability, commitment, organization, discipline, collaboration, and time management manifest in musicking and are relevant to almost any situation.
Ensemble participation also teaches individuals how their personal contributions impact the success of others and that each unique individual matters to the group. I strive to model and teach inclusivity, equity, and musical excellence, so that my students will not only develop their musicianship skills but also become responsible, change-making, global citizens.
